Nine islands in the middle of the Atlantic: volcanic peaks, crater lakes ringed with hydrangea, laurel forest and cliffs that drop straight into the ocean. The weather turns as fast as it does on the Faroes, and the islands are far enough apart that a week means flying between them.

Bruno Ázera lives in the Azores and knows which of those places is worth the drive on which morning. That is the part you cannot research from home.

Eight nights, flights between the islands, and days built around light rather than a schedule. Photography and video, camera and drone, with classroom sessions between the field days — scouting and weather, editing in Lightroom and Resolve, and the business side with Nomadict.

Bruno lives on the islands — which morning we drive where is his call, not a fixed itinerary

How a day runs

A typical day — the real order follows the weather
  1. Before lightOut before sunrise most days. The plan is made the night before from the forecast — and changed on the spot when the sky says otherwise.
  2. In the fieldReading the place first. Where will the light be in forty minutes? Which side of the ridge holds the fog? What is the tide doing? Then exposure, filters, long exposure and drone work where it's allowed — on your camera, standing next to you, not as a lecture. Everyone finds their own position. Your picture shouldn't look like mine.
  3. Middle of the day, indoorsThe hours when the light is no good are the hours we spend on the pictures. Culling, Lightroom and Resolve, my look taken apart step by step. Plus time with just the two of us on your own frames — including the honest answer about what isn't working yet.
  4. Out again for sunsetSecond location, different angle, everything from the morning applied while it's still fresh.
  5. After darkWhere the night has a subject of its own — northern lights, stars, a coast under moonlight — the day doesn't end at dinner. The forecast decides, not the schedule.
  6. Food and sleepBoth happen. Neither is the priority.

What you take home

Craft, not souvenirs
  1. Reading fast weatherCloud, swell and light over volcanic terrain, where a location can change character within the hour.
  2. Scouting with a localHow Bruno picks the spot for the morning, and how to do that yourself somewhere you have never been.
  3. Seascapes and cliffsWorking near edges safely, and building scale so a crater rim reads as one.
  4. Drone over the islandsWhere flying is allowed, and getting footage that isn't fighting the wind.
  5. EditingLightroom and Resolve on deep green and grey-blue — the light the Azores actually give you.
  6. The professional sidePortfolio, media kit and how work turns into commissions, with Nomadict.

Questions

Gear, fitness, weather, money
When will the dates be announced?
Nomadict sets them, and they are not public yet. If you want to hear as soon as they are, the fastest way is my waiting list — the sign-up is on the newsletter page.
What should I bring?
A camera you know how to use — full frame is ideal, but any DSLR or mirrorless body works.
  • A wide zoom and a telephoto (24–70 and 70–200 cover almost everything), or a fixed 35 to 50 mm
  • A tripod
  • Spare batteries and a fast charger
  • Head torch with a red mode, so you don't blind the person next to you
  • Laptop or tablet, card reader, and DaVinci Resolve (the free version is enough)
  • Filters if you have them; a drone if you fly one — you are responsible for registration, insurance and licence

Plus rain jacket, rain trousers and waterproof footwear. The Azores earn their green.

How fit do I need to be?
Moderate walking and hiking, spread over the week. Nothing technical.
Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes — the workshop is built for beginners and intermediates. If you already work professionally, say so early and we will use the week differently.
Who do I actually book with?
Nomadict. They take the booking and the payment, hold the contract with you and are responsible for travel, accommodation and insurance. I come along as one of the instructors.

This tour runs with me. Nomadict pays me for that, organises and sells the trip, holds the contract with you, takes the booking and payment and is responsible for travel, accommodation and insurance. What exactly I contribute is arranged with the operator and differs from trip to trip. I am not a tour operator or a travel agent, I do not take bookings or payments, and no contract comes into being through this website. All statements about dates, prices, places and services are drawn from the operator's published information and are given without warranty — please check the operator's page before booking.
