Training & engineering

Broadcast engineering is the side I came from — and never left. It still runs alongside the picture work.

I move entire broadcasters onto new formats: UHD, HDR, IP, file-based workflows. I plan, specify and commission studios, playout and virtual sets.

Engineering

A long working relationship with Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk: virtual set, graphics systems, video servers, the conference floor.

A format change or a system replacement touches everything at once — acquisition, editing, playout, archive, and the metadata that has to survive all of it.

Evaluation, specification and support come from one place — from the first assessment to the day the building is working with it.

Training

More than 150 camera and broadcast seminars across Germany, Austria and Switzerland so far, with more to come. Teaching in this field since 2009: first directly for NDR, on seminars around broadcast cameras, and part of the BET team since 2011.

At BET in Hamburg these are two-day expert seminars — broadcast infrastructure, file technology, camera recorders, and 4K, Log and HDR. On one of them I am listed as a media engineer, on the other as a cameraman. That is a fair description of the two ends I work at.

Why the two belong together

„Why does the signal look like that“ and „what do I set on the camera“ have the same answer — they are simply answered by two different people everywhere else. That is exactly why I teach both. Someone who knows the signal path sets the camera with more confidence; someone who knows how a set actually works writes a better specification.

Published

SMPTE Media Technology Summit 2024, paper and session: „Elevating Content Creation for Social Media — Harnessing HDR Technology Beyond“. HDR is at home in broadcast and streaming, and the phones people watch on have been able to show it for years. The paper describes the path there: from acquisition through grading to a compression that survives the platform.
