Mobile Stories
An ongoing photography project exploring how far I can push a smartphone as a real camera.
Over several series and different Xiaomi devices, I take the phones into situations I would normally approach with professional cameras, multiple lenses and much larger setups – from everyday documentary moments and landscapes to long focal lengths, difficult light and even shooting the Aurora at night.
The idea is simple: use the phone like I would use a camera.
Look for the same light. Wait for the same moments. Think about composition and perspective. Push the different focal lengths. Work with the limitations rather than avoiding them.
Sometimes it makes photography incredibly flexible. I can have a camera with me almost everywhere, react immediately and work much more unobtrusively. Sometimes it is a real challenge – especially when the light disappears, subjects are far away or conditions push the small camera system to its limits.
And that is exactly what makes the project interesting to me.
I know what I would expect from my professional camera setup in these situations. Trying to create an image with a phone instead changes the way I work – and the results keep surprising me.
Different countries. Different stories. Different Xiaomi devices. Multiple series.
An ongoing project – and a continuing challenge to see how far mobile photography can go.
Every image in this series was shot on the phone.
